Walter Stechel (born July 20, 1953 in Darmstadt ) is a German diplomat .

Life

After an apprenticeship as a bank clerk at Deutsche Bank in Darmstadt, he studied economics at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz , which he graduated in 1979 with the academic degree "Diplom-Volkswirt".

After joining the Foreign Service in 1980, he was employed at the Embassy in Chile , at the Consulate General in San Francisco (Vice Consul for Press and Culture), at the Foreign Office in Bonn (speaker in the Department for Scientific and Technological Cooperation), at the Embassy in Argentina (Advisor for Development Cooperation), at the Embassy in Canada (Head of the Economic Department) and again at the Foreign Office. From 1994 to 1998 he was Deputy Head of the “Economic Relations with Russia and the Newly Independent States” department.

From 1998 to 2000 Walter Stechel was a freelance member of the Foreign Office's staff council . During these years the appointments of Joachim Schmillen and Joscha Schmierer were controversial in terms of career law . However, these appointments, which also required the approval of the staff representatives, came under the crossfire of criticism. Thereafter, Stechel became permanent representative of the ambassador to Ethiopia .

From 2003 to August 2006 he was Head of Division 401 (“Principles and Coordination of Development Policy”) of the German Foreign Office and, since August 2006, Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Mumbai , India . In June 2010, he was followed by Leopold-Theodor Heldman , who was previously ambassador to Chad . Subsequently, in June 2010, Stechel became a Fellow at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University . Since September 2013 he has been Consul General at the German Consulate General in Toronto . Stechel has been retired since June 2019.
