Joachim Schmillen

Joachim Schmillen (born December 6, 1962 in Prüm ) is a German diplomat.

career

As part of officer training (1983–1988) in the Bundeswehr , Schmillen studied pedagogy and psychology at the University of the Bundeswehr in Munich from 1984 to 1988 . After completing his studies, he refused to do military service. From 1987 he worked for the independent MP Alfred Mechtersheimer and in the 12th electoral term (1990–1994) for the green MP Vera Lengsfeld .

He then worked as the office manager of the parliamentary group leader Joschka Fischer of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen . With his appointment as Federal Foreign Minister in 1998, Schmillen took over the position of Office Manager of the Minister. In 2000, Schmillen succeeded Georg Clemens Dick as head of the Foreign Office's planning staff , who became ambassador to Chile .

In 2003 he succeeded Dick as ambassador to Chile . In 2006 he was replaced there by Peter Scholz and in July 2006 he was appointed ambassador to Nigeria , where he replaced Dietmar Kreusel . In September 2011 he became ambassador to Peru . Schmillen was Ambassador to Jamaica from 2014 to 2018 .
