Complete medal table

The 1st  European Athletics Championships took place from September 7th to 9th, 1934 in Turin , Italy . With the exception of the marathon and the 50 km walk , the competitions were held in the Stadio Benito Mussolini . At that time, only men were allowed to compete, women were not included until 1938 .

Competitions

From the beginning, the competition program included almost all disciplines, as they were also common in the Olympic Games . However, the 3000 meter obstacle course was still missing . The walking was concerning. The disciplines not yet standardized like today. On the competition calendar in Turin there was only the competition over the 50 km distance.

Athletic performance

The highlight was the javelin throw - world record of the Finn Matti Järvinen with 76.66 m.

The most successful nation was Germany with seven European champions. The special promotion of sport under the National Socialist regime with its propaganda goals contributed to this. It should not be forgotten that the exclusion of Jewish athletes, regardless of their ability to perform, was just beginning. They were subject to the same reprisals as the Jewish population in Germany as a whole. In the nations ranking, Finland followed with five, the Netherlands with three and Hungary with two European Championship titles.

There were three athletes who could win more than one gold medal in these championships:

The score was based on the point table from 1920.

For orientation and classification of the performances, the scores achieved in 1985 according to the current rating system are also listed for comparison. There would have been the following deviations in the placements:

  • The fifth-placed Armin Guhl would have won bronze.
  • Bronze medalist Jerzy Pławczyk would be fourth.
  • The fourth-placed Jānis Dimza would be fifth.

But these comparisons are only indicative, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis.
