Matti Sippala (born March 11, 1908 in Hollola , † August 22, 1997 in Kotka ) was a Finnish javelin thrower who was successful in the early 1930s.

He won two silver medals in international competitions.

  • At the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1932 , he came in the first attempt to qualify on an excellent 68.14 m. In the final, he showed a descending performance curve with two throws over 62.98 m and 61.22 m, before he achieved his best distance of 69.80 m in the last attempt. He won the silver medal behind the outstanding Matti Järvinen , who exceeded the 70 m mark three times, ahead of the third Finn Eino Penttilä , who “only” came third with 68.70 m, although he was over 66 with two more throws , 36 m and 65.40 m had shown a higher consistency of performance than Sippala.
  • At the European Championships , held for the first time in Turin in 1934 , he won with 69.97 m, which he achieved in the last attempt, his second silver medal just ahead of the Estonian Gustav Sule, who also threw over 69 m (69.31 m), was his again Compatriot Järvinen, who set a new world record with 76.66 m, was several meters behind.

With his 70.02 m thrown in 1932, Sippala was also allowed to join the group of 70 m throwers. He was no longer at the start at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin . Nothing is known about his placements at the Finnish national championships.
