The name Trilux (from the Greek tri 'three' and lux 'light') comes from so-called linear lamps that we developed ourselves, with which a three-fold light output was possible with the same power consumption compared to conventional incandescent lamps .

history

The company was founded in Menden (Sauerland) by Wilhelm Lenze in 1912 and originally dealt with the production of accessories for the lighting industry as well as simple tube pendant and wall lights for gas and electric lighting. The production facilities in an extension to the residential building reached their capacity limit in the early 1930s, which is why the company relocated its headquarters to Hüsten (now Arnsberg) in 1934 and expanded the production program to include living room lights. At that time the company had around 50 employees. During the time of National Socialism , Wilhelm Lenze and his son Eberhard had significant problems with the regime. Both were arrested on August 20, 1933 for insulting the Reich government. Although they were soon released, the local party leadership was critical of the company. In 1944, the armaments supervisor of the Lüdenscheid armaments command ordered the expropriation and closure of the company due to allegedly poor performance. Only after Eberhard Lenze had successfully intervened with the Munster armaments inspection, the order was withdrawn. The production facilities were destroyed by bombs in March 1945.

The resumption of operations took place in 1948 by Wilhelm Lenze and his sons Eberhard, Franz and Wilhelm. The company expanded during the years of the economic boom by manufacturing technical lights for low-voltage fluorescent lamps ("linear lights"). In 1949 the production of incandescent lamps was completely given up, only linear lamps were still in the product range. Due to the increasing demand, the production facilities had to be enlarged again. The product range was also expanded to include lights for gas discharge lamps and street lights. In 1952 around 250 people worked in the company. In addition to the national market, Trilux turned more and more to international business. Following on from the early contacts of Wilhelm Lenze, a dense network of commercial agencies was established in Europe. The number of employees rose to 750 by 1962. Since 1963 the company has also been dealing with lighting solutions in the medical field. The turnover increased within ten years from five to 35 million DM. Ludwig Erhard , the then Federal Minister of Economics , gave the speech at the big 50th anniversary celebration in 1962 . In 1984 Trilux took over the Swiss company BAG. Eberhard Lenze died in 1985. At that time, the company was one of the three most important manufacturers of professional lighting systems.

75 years after the company was founded, in 1987, the Trilux light information center was set up in the administration building. In addition to the presentation of numerous products and lighting solutions, it also has its own lecture hall with 100 seats. The company's activities in the area of moisture-proof technology were promoted with the acquisition of Zalux SA in Saragossa .

After the Lenze family withdrew from the operative business, Michael Huber took over the management as a general representative in 2006. He also holds the same position at Veltins . After Huber took over the business, the company invested heavily, increased sales and took over other businesses.

In the area of shop and retail lighting, Trilux has owned Oktalite Lichttechnik GmbH in Cologne since 2007 . In the same year, the outdoor lighting specialist DZ Licht based in Fröndenberg was acquired. Since the end of 2008, parts of the East Westphalian manufacturer of electronic components Hüco have also been part of the Trilux Group. In the same year the European Distribution Center (EDC) was opened in the Wiebelsheide industrial park, Arnsberg. In 2010 Trilux took over the special light manufacturer RSL. The medical technology division was sold to MGI Deutschland Holding in 2015.

The company currently has around 1,500 employees at its headquarters in Arnsberg, 1,700 across Germany. In addition to the main plant, there is also BAG electronics , which belongs to the company and produces electronic components. The Trilux Group employs around 5,500 people worldwide.
