József Sir (born April 28, 1912 in Budapest as József Schier ; † September 22, 1996 ibid) was a Hungarian athlete who specialized in the sprint.

biography

József Sir won three medals at the European Athletics Championships in Turin in 1934 , the first ever European Athletics Championships. In the 200-meter run , he won the silver medal, as well as with the Hungarian sprint relay . In 100 Meters bronze medal was added.

Also in 1934, Sir won the 100 yard race at the British Amateur Championships in 9.9 seconds.

Sir was even more successful at the International University Games , the forerunners of today's Universiade . In his hometown Budapest in 1935 he won both the 100 m and the 200 m and with the sprint relay. He celebrated another 100 m victory in Vienna in 1939 . Over 200 m he achieved a silver medal, there were bronze medals with the sprint relay as well as the special 10 x 200 meter relay.

At the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin , Sir was used in all three sprint disciplines. Over 100 m he made it to the semi-finals, where he was the last to retire in his run. In the 200-meter run , he made it to the semifinals, in which he was eliminated in fourth of his run. The Hungarian sprint relay with him as the final runner failed as third in the preliminary run.

At the national level, József Sir was very successful. In 1934, 1935 and 1939 he was Hungarian champion over 100 m. In the same years he won the championship over 200 m.

Sir's best time over 100 m was 10.4 s, which he achieved in 1934. A year later he ran his personal best over 200 m with 21.4 s.

His nephew László Hammerl was at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo in Shooting Olympic champion .
