Arturo Maffei (born November 9, 1909 in Viareggio , † August 17, 2006 in Torre del Lago ) was an Italian long jumper .

At the European Championships in Turin in 1934 he was fifth with 7.12 m and was 13 cm behind the width of Luz Long , who won the bronze medal.

The long jump final at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin went down in track and field history thanks to the duel between Jesse Owens and Luz Long. Behind them, Naoto Tajima , Wilhelm Leichum and Maffei, three jumpers fought for bronze who were only an inch apart in the end. Tajima won bronze with 7.74 meters ahead of Leichum and Maffei, both of whom are ranked fourth. During the competition there was a tail wind of over three meters per second. Even so, Maffei's width was recognized as an Italian record. This record was only exceeded in 1968 with 7.91 meters by Giuseppe Gentile .

In 1938 the best three jumpers were nine centimeters apart at the European Championships in Paris , but had an advantage of around 30 centimeters over the competition. The defending champion Leichum won with 7.65 meters ahead of Maffei with 7.61 meters and Long with 7.56 meters.

Maffei won his first Italian championship title in 1930, he repeated the title in 1932 and from 1935 to 1940 he won six times in a row. He improved the Italian record three times with 7.42 meters, 7.50 meters and the wind-assisted 7.73 meters from Berlin. On September 12, 1937, he achieved his longest jump under regular conditions in Colombes with 7.63 m.

Maffei started for Giglio Rosso Florence during his career . After his career, he was part of the coaching staff of the soccer club Fiorentina, and was there when the latter first became Italian soccer champion in 1956.
