At the World Championships in Helsinki in 2005 , he finished fifth with 8246 points and once again confirmed that he is one of the world's best. However, without his weakness in the final discipline, the 1,500 meter run, he would have had a good chance of winning the bronze medal. After the 1500 meter run he reached fourth place with 8245 points and more than 100 points behind a medal. Again the Hungarian Zsivóczky had passed him and also his compatriot Alexei Drozdov .

At the 2009 World Championships in Berlin , Pogorelow managed to win the bronze medal when the American Trey Hardee won.

doping

During follow-up examinations of the doping samples from the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , it became clear that Pogorelow was doped. The IOC therefore subsequently disqualified him.
