Tyree Washington

Tyree Washington [ ˈwɔʃiŋtən ] (born August 28, 1976 in Riverside , California ) is an American track and field athlete . He is a three-time world champion.

Washington attended La Sierra High School and the San Bernardino Valley Community College.

He celebrated his first international success in 1997 at the World Championships in Athens . With the US 4 x 400 meter relay , he was in the finish before the British relay. The initially awarded world championship title was withdrawn from the relay participants after Antonio Pettigrew admitted the intake of growth hormones and EPO . Over 400 meters , Tyree Washington won the bronze medal behind his compatriot Michael Johnson and Davis Kamoga from Uganda .

Washington set a world record with the 4 x 400 meter relay on July 22, 1998 at the Goodwill Games . This was however in the course of the withdrawal of results in which Antonio Pettigrew was involved, canceled on August 12, 2008.

Washington was not able to build on these successes again until 2003. In spring he was indoor world champion over 400 meters and with the 4 x 400 meter relay in Birmingham . At the World Championships in Paris he was again world champion with the 4 x 400 meter relay. This gold medal was also subsequently revoked from the US relay team. Washington became world champion over 400 meters (as it later turned out, the original winner Jerome Young had been doped).

Tyree Washington was trained by his former teammate Antonio Pettigrew, who had been stripped of numerous results for doping abuse.
