Nelson Évora (born April 20, 1984 in Ivory Coast ) is a Portuguese triple jumper and Olympic champion .

Évora was born to Cape Verdean parents in the Ivory Coast. His parents moved him to Portugal when he was five years old. He holds the Cape Verdean records in the long jump with 7.57 m, set up in May 2002 in Lisbon, and in the triple jump with 16.15 m, set up in June 2001 in Braga . In 2002 he received the Portuguese citizenship.

At the 2003 Junior European Championships in Tampere , he won the long jump with 7.83 m and the triple jump with 16.43 m. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , he was 40th in qualifying in the triple jump and failed to qualify for the final. A year later at the World Championships in Helsinki , he just failed in qualifying as 14th.

He achieved his first final ranking at major international championships in Moscow at the 2006 World Indoor Championships . With 17.16 m he was sixth in the triple jump. In the summer of the 2006 European Championships in Gothenburg , he reached the finals in both the long jump and the triple jump. With 7.91 m he was sixth in the long jump, in the triple jump he was fourth with 17.07 m after he had improved the Portuguese national record in the qualification with 17.23 m for the third time in his career. In the final, the 17.23 m would have been enough for silver behind the Swede Christian Olsson . At the end of the season he won gold at the Jogos da Lusofonia 2006 .

In Birmingham at the European Indoor Championships in 2007, Évora was fifth in the triple jump with 16.97 m. At the 2007 World Championships in Osaka , he surpassed himself. With the national record of 17.74 m, he won gold in front of the Brazilian Jadel Gregório and the defending champion Walter Davis from the USA. After Carlos Calado , who finished third in the long jump in 2001, Nelson Évora is only the second Portuguese to win a World Cup medal in a jumping competition. With a width of 17.67 m, Évora was Olympic champion at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing .

He won the silver medal at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin and the bronze medal at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing .

Évora is 1.81 m tall, weighs 64 kg and starts for Benfica Lisbon .
