Walter Davis (born July 2, 1979 in Lafayette , Louisiana ) is an American track and field athlete who became world champion (2005) in the triple jump and is also a good long jumper .

At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney , Walter Davis took part in an international high point for the first time. Here he was eleventh with a width of 16.61 m. He had qualified third in the US Olympic Trials for the long jump, but only competed in the triple jump in Sydney. A year later at the 2001 World Championships in Edmonton he was already fifth in the triple jump competition with 17.20 m.

In 2002 he was the first US champion in the triple jump with a distance of 17.59 m, a year later he was also the US champion in the long jump with 8.24 m. At the 2003 World Championships in Paris , he also took part in an international competition for the first time in both competitions, which, however, had a rather negative impact on his performance. In the long jump he was seventh with 8.02 m, in the triple jump he could not reach the final with 16.60 m.

In 2004 he made this mistake again and, after finishing the triple jump US trials with an excellent distance of 17.63 m in second place, he started again in both competitions at the Olympic Games in Athens . He finished the triple jump competition with 16.78 m in eleventh place and in the long jump he did not reach the final with 7.80 m.

In 2005 he was again American triple jump champion and fourth in the long jumpers. At the World Championships in Helsinki in 2005 , he therefore only started in the triple jumpers and became world champion with 17.57 m. He benefited from the fact that Olympic champion Christian Olsson from Sweden was injured and Marian Oprea from Romania was unable to match his world best of the year of 17.81 m and won the bronze medal.

In 2007 he was third at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka with 17.33 meters.

Between July 2012 and July 2013 Davis was not found in three doping tests and was therefore banned for one year.

Walter Davis is 1.88 m tall and has a competition weight of 83 kg.

Personal best (as of July 2007)

  • Long jump - 8.36 m (2007)
  • Triple jump - 17.71 m (2006)
