Will Claye (born June 13, 1991 in Tucson ) is an American long and triple jumper .
Life
In 2009 he became US and Pan America junior triple jump champion and, starting for the University of Oklahoma , NCAA triple jump champion.
In 2011 he moved to the University of Florida and became US runner-up in long and triple jump. At the World Athletics Championships in Daegu , he was ninth in the long jump and won bronze in the triple jump with the new personal best of 17.50 m.
In 2012 Claye increased his indoor triple jump distance to 17.70 m and was thus world indoor champion in Istanbul . In the long jump, he finished fourth. At the Olympic Games in London he improved to 17.62 m outdoors and won the silver medal in the triple jump. He secured a second medal in the long jump, where he was third with a margin of one centimeter.
At the World Championships in Moscow in 2013 he won the bronze medal with 17.52 m.
In June 2014 he won the US championships against long-term competitor Christian Taylor with a new record of 17.75 m .
In 2015, at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing, surprisingly, with a width of 16.41 m, he did not exceed the qualification. He came in second in the US championships and fifth in the world's best list.
In 2016 Claye tried to qualify for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in both the long jump and the triple jump . At the USA Olympic Trials, a third place with 8.42 m, which actually ensures participation in the Olympics, was not enough for him, since the athlete must have passed the qualification standard. The jumps within the elimination competition, with which he had exceeded the norm, were not taken into account due to inadmissible wind support. After his triple jump victory, Claye only took part in the Olympic Games in this discipline. There he was able to secure the silver medal behind Christian Taylor, also from the United States, with a width of 17.76 m, a new personal best.
On May 27, 2017, he fought a duel with him at the Diamond League in Eugene (Oregon) , for the second time in history two athletes jumped more than 18 meters in a competition. With a width of 18.05 m, which was not rated as the best performance due to an impermissible tail wind, Claye had to admit defeat to Taylor, who jumped six centimeters further. Claye's second best jump of 17.82 m also marked a new personal best. At the World Championships in London , he won the silver medal behind Taylor.
At the 2018 Indoor World Championships in Birmingham, he narrowly beat Almir dos Santos and Nelson Évora with 17.43 m and won his second gold medal at an Indoor World Championships.
In August 2018, Claye gave a positive doping test for Clenbuterol . It has been traced back to contaminated meat from Mexico, so Claye was not banned.
As in 2017, he won the silver medal behind Christian Taylor at the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha .
Will Claye is 1.80 m tall and weighs 73 kg. He is featured as a feature in the 2013 song IDGAF by rapper YG .
