Almir Cunha dos Santos (born September 4, 1993 in Matupá , Mato Grosso ) is a Brazilian athlete who specializes in the triple jump . In 2018 he became vice indoor world champion .
Athletic career
Almir dos Santos comes from central Brazil. At first he only competed in high jump competitions. In 2010 he became the Brazilian U18 champion and won the U18 South American Championships in October by skipping 2.005 m. A year later, he also competed in the long jump after moving to Porto Alegre , where he found better training conditions. At the U20 South American Championships in Medellín, he was fourth in the high jump.
In 2012 he qualified in the high jump for the U20 World Championships in Barcelona. With 2.05 m he could not qualify for the final and ended up in 26th place. He almost completely missed the next season after suffering a stress fracture in his right foot. His injury worries continued in 2014. During a training session, he broke an ankle that forced him to walk on crutches for months. It was then the coach of the triple jump Olympic champion from 2008 Irving Saladino , Nelio Moura, who, in consultation with coach Gomes dos Santos', suggested that he focus on the triple jump so that he could compete in the first competitions in the new discipline from 2016, initially at the national level. Between 2015 and 2017 it increased its width by more than two meters to 16.86 m. In June 2017, however, he competed in the long jump at the South American Championships in Asunción, where he finished fifth.
In 2018 he made his international breakthrough. After several competitions in which he jumped over 17 meters, he rose to 17.41 m at the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham, with which he won the silver medal. He beat his idol Nelson Évora and jumped only two centimeters shorter than indoor world champion Will Claye . In May he set his best of 17.53 m in a competition in France. In 2019 he finished fourth at the Pan American Games in Lima. At the season highlight, the World Championships in Doha, he made it into the final with 16.92 m. There he jumped just over 15 meters after just two failed attempts and thus finished twelfth and last place. In 2019 he was also the first Brazilian triple jump champion.
