Serge Hélan

Serge Hélan (born February 24, 1964 in Pointe-à-Pitre in Guadeloupe ) is a former French triple jumper .

In 1986 he was the first French to break the 17-meter mark with 17.13 m and finished ninth at the European Athletics Championships in Stuttgart . In 1987 he won gold at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Liévin , but retired from qualifying at the World Athletics Championships in Rome .

In 1989 he was fourth at the European Indoor Championships in The Hague and sixth at the World Indoor Championships in Budapest . At the European Athletics Championships in 1990 in Split and at the 1991 World Championships , he failed in the preliminary round. In 1992 he won silver at the European Indoor Championships in Genoa . In both the triple jump and the long jump , he qualified for the Olympic Games in Barcelona , but did not get past the first round in both disciplines.

The following year he was ninth at the 1993 World Championships in Stuttgart. In 1994 he was fourth at the European Indoor Championships in Paris and won silver at the European Championships in Helsinki .

In 1995 a bronze medal followed at the World Indoor Championships in Barcelona and a preliminary round at the World Championships in Gothenburg . In 1997 he was tenth at the World Championships in Athens , and in 1998 he finished his international career with a bronze medal at the European Indoor Championships in Valencia .

Serge Hélan is 1.76 m tall and weighs 70 kg. He was trained by Jean-Hervé Stievenart and started for CA Montreuil.

He was French outdoor champion six times (1986, 1987, 1989, 1991, 1994, 1996) and eleven times indoors (1986–1990, 1992–1995, 1997, 1998). In 1990 and 1992 he was also the national long jump indoor champion.
