Denis Viktorovich Kapustin

Denis Wiktorowitsch Kapustin ( Russian Денис Викторович Капустин; born October 5, 1970 in Kazan ) is a former Russian athlete . He was European triple jump champion in 1994 and won the Olympic bronze in 2000. With a height of 1.90 m, his competition weight was 86 kg.

Still starting for the Soviet Union, Kapustin was Junior European Champion in 1989 and fourth at the Universiade in 1991.

In 1993 at the World Championships in Stuttgart, he finished sixth with 17.19 m. At the European Indoor Championships in 1994 in Paris-Bercy, he won 17.35 m silver, nine centimeters behind his compatriot Leonid Woloschin . In the summer of the European Championships in Helsinki in 1994 , he won with 17.62 m and seven centimeters ahead of the French Serge Hélan .

After two weaker years, Kapustin was fourth at the 1997 World Championships in Athens with 17.59 m, six centimeters behind the bronze place of Aliecer Urrutia . In Budapest at the European Championships in 1998 Kapustin won the silver medal with 17.44 m, but was more than half a meter behind the winner Jonathan Edwards . Shortly before the European Championships, Kapustin had achieved his personal best with 17.65 m.

At the 1999 World Championships in Seville, Kapustin finished ninth with 16.89 m. In 2000 Kapustin won his only Russian championship title. At the Olympic Games in Sydney he jumped 17.46 m and won bronze one centimeter behind the Cuban Yoel García .
