There was no clear favorite in this select field. The inner circle of the coin aspirants belonging Olympic champion in 2016 and runner-up world champion in 2015 Faith Kipyegon of Kenya, the Ethiopian defending champion, Olympic silver medalist from 2016 and world record holder Genzebe Dibaba, the US-American Jennifer Simpson as Olympic bronze medalist from 2016 and Vice World Champion in 2013 , the Dutch World Cup - Third from 2015, European Champion from 2014 and Vice European Champion from 2016 Sifan Hassan and the South African Caster Semenya, who had great successes above all as an 800-meter runner, is already world champion at this distance here in London .

For a long period, the British Laura Muir set the pace. The first lap was completed fairly quickly with 1: 05.34 min, but the second was much slower with 1: 11.77 min. In the last four hundred meters it got faster again. Even the section between 800 and 1200 meters was really fast with 1: 01.82 minutes. Three hundred meters from the finish at the beginning of the back straight, Hassan led, who tried to find her chance with a long sprint. The field was now tearing apart. Hassan was still in the lead at the start of the home stretch. Kipyegon followed her. Muir fought to catch up with the leading duo, but had to allow a small gap. With a distance of two meters from her, Simpson was in fourth place ahead of the Swede Meraf Bahta, who, however, was now running out of strength.

Now came the attack by the Olympic champion. Faith Kipyegon passed Hassan and became the new world champion by a clear margin. Beyond that everything changed again. Jenny Simpson passed the slacking Hassan inside and won the silver medal. From further back, the 800-meter world champion Caster Semenya sprinted a medal with bronze even in the longer distance. Sifan Hassan's pace work on the last three hundred meters was not rewarded, beaten by 37 hundredths of a second, she finished fifth behind Laura Muir, who was fourth, just seven hundredths of a second behind Semenya. Laura Weightman, also from Great Britain, came in sixth place ahead of the reigning European champion Angelika Cichocka from Poland and the Moroccan Rababe Arafi.
