Meraf Bahta Ogbagaber (born August 24, 1989 in Dekishahay ) is a Swedish athlete of Eritrean origin.

Athletic career

Born in Eritrea, Bahta represented her home country internationally for the first time at the 2005 World Cross Country Championships in Saint-Galmier, where she took 32nd place in the junior women's race. The following year she was twelfth at the World Cross Country Championships in Fukuoka and fifth in the 1500-meter run at the Junior World Championships in Beijing . She achieved her best result at the Cross Country World Championships in Mombasa in 2007 , when she reached sixth place in the junior women's race and led the Eritrean team to the silver medal in the team standings. In the same year she was seventh in the 5000-meter run and ninth in the 1500 meters at the Pan-African Games in Algiers . At the World Cross Country Championships in Edinburgh in 2008 , she finished 43rd in the women's race. When she received a draft notice for military service in December 2008, she used a stay in a training camp in Spain to flee to Sweden, where she was granted permanent residence in 2010. There she moved to Kode and joined the Hälle IF under coach Ulf Björklund.

In 2011 Bahta became Swedish champion in the 5000 meter run. In July 2013, her best performance over 1500 meters increased to 4: 05.11 minutes at a track and field meeting in Heusden-Zolder, Belgium, and thus undercut the international qualification standard for the World Championships in Moscow . The Migrationsverket thereupon promised to accelerate their naturalization process.

On January 14, 2014, Bahta received Swedish citizenship and has been eligible to compete internationally for Sweden since January 29, 2014. In May she set a new Swedish record in the 5,000-meter run at the Palo Alto with 14: 59.49 minutes. At the European Championships in Zurich , she won the gold medal over the same distance in 15: 31.39 minutes. She won the silver medal at the 2016 European Championships in Amsterdam .

At the 2017 European Athletics Indoor Championships , she achieved fourth place in the final over 1500 meters. At the Golden Gala in Rome 2017, she improved her 1500 meter record to 4: 00.59 min.

At the European Championships in Berlin in 2018 , she won the bronze medal over 10,000 m. She was allowed to start, although she had not been found for doping tests three times before and a case against her was pending. Only at the end of June 2019 was it blocked by the Swedish Association for one year retrospectively from September 1, 2018. In August 2020, the independent athletes' commission canceled their results between May 24, 2018 and August 31, 2018 and thus also the medal of the European Championships in Berlin.
