Yasemin Can (* 11. December 1996 in Kenya as Vivian Jemutai ) is a Turkish long-distance runner of Kenyan origin.

Yasemin Can was born in Kenya as Vivian Jemutai and has lived in Turkey since March 13, 2015. On May 25, 2015, she received Turkish citizenship , and since March 13, 2016, she has been eligible to compete internationally for Turkey. Yasemin Can has no direct connection to the long-distance runner of the same name, who was born in Turkey in 1992 and who became junior world champion in mountain running in 2009 and 2010.

Athletic career

The World Athletics Federation IAAF does not have any competition results for Can before 2015. In 2016 she became the Turkish champion over 3000 meters and 5000 meters indoors and over 10,000 meters outdoors. In addition, she finished 29th in the Rotterdam Marathon in 2:47:11 h and in sixth place at the Golden Gala in Rome over 5000 meters. At the European Championships in Amsterdam , she won the titles in the 5000 and 10,000 meters. She achieved a European record over 10,000 meters with a time of 31: 12.86 minutes in the U23 age group. At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, she increased her best performance to 30: 26.41 minutes and thus finished seventh in the 10,000 meter run. Over 5000 meters she was sixth in Rio de Janeiro in 14: 56.96 minutes. On her 20th birthday, she won the gold medal at the European Cross Country Championships in Chia in front of her compatriot Meryem Akda and led the Turkish team to victory in the team classification.

At the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade in 2017 , Can set a Turkish national record over 3000 meters with a time of 8: 43.46 minutes and thus won the silver medal behind the Briton Laura Muir . At the U23 European Championships in Bydgoszcz , Poland , she celebrated a superior double over the long distances and set a new championship record in both competitions.
