The Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce , among other things world champion from 2013 and 2015 , Olympic champion from 2012 and 2016 again Olympic third, was no longer there in London . Even after the semi-final results, a close race became apparent. The favorites were Olympic champion Elaine Thompson from Jamaica - in the semifinals with the fastest time, the US Olympic runner-up and third place in the 2015 World Cup, Tori Bowie, the Dutch runner-up in 2015 Dafne Schippers and the Olympic champion Marie Josée Ta Lou from the Ivory Coast - in Semi-finals second fastest. There was also the Brazilian Rosângela Santos - third fastest semi-finalist with a new South American record.

Ta Lou was best off the starting blocks. After a quick start, Ta Lou and Kelly-Ann Baptiste from Trinidad and Tobago were just ahead after fifty meters. The runner from Ivory Coast also looked very good on the second half of the course. Compared to almost all competitors, she increased her small lead. But Tori Bowie flew up from behind and took the world title in the last few meters. Beaten by just a hundredth of a second, Marie Josée Ta Lou won the silver medal. A tenth of a second behind her, Dafne Schippers crossed the finish line in third place. Murielle Ahouré, the second sprinter from Ivory Coast in this final, finished fourth ahead of Elaine Thompson and Michelle-Lee Ahye from Trinidad and Tobago. Rosângela Santos was seventh, Kelly-Ann Baptiste was eighth.
