Kelly-Ann Kaylene Baptiste (born October 14, 1986 in Scarborough , Tobago ) is a track and field athlete from Trinidad and Tobago who specializes in sprinting .

Athletic career

Kelly-Ann Baptiste gained her first international experience at the CARIFTA Games 2001 in Bridgetown , where she took sixth place in the U17 age group in the 100 meter run in 12.39 s and over 200 meters in 25.27 s Came fifth. The following year she was eliminated from the CARIFTA Games in Nassau over 200 meters with 24.79 s in the lead and won the bronze medal over 100 meters in 12.05 s. Then she won at the Central America and Caribbean Junior Championships (CAC) also in the U17 age group in 24.82 s, the silver medal in the 200-meter run and was sixth over 100 meters in 12.36 s. At the Junior World Championships in Kingston , she came over 100 meters to the semifinals, in which she was eliminated with 12.03 s. At the CARIFTA Games in 2005 in Port of Spain , she competed in the U20 age group for the first time and took fifth place over 100 and 200 meters in 11.77 s and 24.31 s before she did a Trinidadian-Tobacco four times -100 meter relay won the silver medal in 45.09 s. Then she won the bronze medal over 100 meters at the Youth World Championships in Sherbrooke in 11.58 s and was disqualified with the sprint relay (1000 meters) in the final. At the Pan American Junior Championships in Bridgetown, she won the bronze medal in the 4-by-100-meter relay in 45.15 s and she finished sixth in 23.74 s over 200 meters. She then took part in the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo for the first time and was eliminated there over 100 meters with 11.83 s in the semifinals, before taking fourth place with the relay in 43.97 s.

At the CARIFTA Games 2004 in Hamilton , she won bronze in the 100 and 200 meters in 11.94 s and 23.86 s, respectively, and with the 4 x 100 meter relay she won the silver medal in 46.09 s. She then took part in the CAC Junior Championships in Coatzacoalcos , where she won over 200 meters in 23.37 s and won over 100 meters and the silver medal with the relay in 11.50 s and 45.10 s respectively. This qualified her for the Junior World Championships in Grosseto , where she finished fourth over 200 meters in 23.46 s, as well as with the relay in 44.14 s. She was therefore also given a starting place in the relay for the Olympic Games in Athens , which was eliminated in the run-up to a faulty replacement.

In 2005 she began studying at Louisiana State University and won her last CARIFTA Games in Bacolet in 11.39 s and 23.25 s over 100 and 200 meters and won the silver medal in 44.76 s with the relay. In addition, she qualified for the first time for the World Championships in Helsinki , where she reached the quarter-finals over 100 meters, in which she was eliminated with 11.42 s. In 2008, in her final year of study, she became NCAA champion in the 60-meter run indoors and over 100 meters outdoors. She took part again in the Olympic Games in Beijing and did not get there over 100 meters with 11.42 s beyond the quarter-finals . In the 4 x 100 meter relay, the Trinidadian team did not reach the finish again in the lead .

In 2009 she started her professional career and set a new national record over 200 meters with 22.60 s, with which she qualified for the World Championships in Berlin , where she did both over 100 and 200 meters with 11.07 s and 22, Eliminated in the semifinals in 96 s, while she finished sixth in the 4 x 100 meter relay in 43.43 s. At the 2010 Athletics Continental Cup , she won over 100 meters as well as with the American team in the 4 x 100 meter relay. In 2011 she won the bronze medal over 100 meters at the World Championships in Daegu in 10.98 s behind the Americans Carmelita Jeter and Veronica Campbell-Brown from Jamaica. With the relay, she originally came in fourth place, but was later disqualified for a doping violation of her compatriot Semoy Hackett . At the Olympic Games in London Baptiste reached over 100 meters to the final , in which she came in sixth with 10.94 s. With the relay, they also originally reached the final , but they did not reach the finish and the relay was subsequently disqualified for the doping offense, which annulled the national record of 42.31 s set up in the run-up. In 2013 she competed in competitions up to the World Championships in Moscow , but was then tested for a prohibited substance herself and was then banned until 2015.

After her suspension expired, she took part in the Pan American Games in Toronto for the second time in 2015 , where she was fifth over 100 meters in 11.05 s and did not finish with the relay in the lead. She qualified for the World Championships in Beijing, where she finished fifth over 100 meters with 11.01 s in the final . In addition, she won the bronze medal behind Jamaica and the United States with the relay with a new national record of 42.03 s. The following year she took part in the World Indoor Championships in Portland over 60 meters and was eliminated there with 7.16 s in the semifinals. At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , she was surprisingly eliminated with 11.42 s in the first round and finished fifth with the relay with 42.12 s in the final . At the IAAF World Relays 2017 in the Bahamas, she did not make it to the finish with the relay in the run-up and took eighth place at the World Championships in London with 11.09 s in the finals and achieved rank with the relay in 42.62 s six.

In 2018 she took part again in the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham , but was eliminated again with 7.21 s in the semifinals. The following year she was at the Pan American Games in Lima eighth in 11.52 s and finished fourth with the relay in 43.57 s. At the end of September she reached the semi-finals at the World Championships in Doha , where she was eliminated with 11.19 s, while she came in sixth with the relay in 42.71 s.

In 2005 and 2006 as well as from 2008 to 2010, 2012 and 2015 Baptiste became a Trinidadian-Tobagian champion in the 100-meter run and in 2005 also over 200 meters.

Honors

In 2011 Kelly-Anne Baptiste was named Sportswoman of the Year by the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee .
