The women's 100-meter run at the 2012 London Olympics was held on August 3rd and 4th, 2012 in the London Olympic Stadium. 79 athletes took part.
The Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce became Olympic champion . She won ahead of the American Carmelita Jeter and the Jamaican Veronica Campbell-Brown .
Tatjana Pinto and Verena Sailer started for Germany . Pinto was eliminated in the preliminary round, Sailer in the semifinals.
Athletes from Switzerland, Austria and Liechtenstein did not take part.

Sprinter Tameka Williams from St. Kitts and Nevis admitted taking banned drugs after a positive test and had to leave the Olympic village before the start of the competitions.

A three-way battle was expected between the two Jamaicans Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, the 2008 Olympic champion , and Veronica Campbell-Brown and the US World Champion Carmelita Jeter. Allyson Felix from the USA, who was rated higher in the 200-meter distance, was also given a medal chance.
Fraser-Pryce had the best start in the final race, but Jeter was almost level. Only in the last twenty meters was Fraser-Pryce able to gain the decisive advantage. She won with three hundredths of a second ahead of Jeter, who in turn had three hundredths of a second ahead of Campbell-Brown. Felix finished fifth behind third US runner Tianna Madison. The runners in positions three, four, six, seven and eight ran the fastest times at the Olympic Games for such placements in this final.
After Wyomia Tyus and Gail Devers, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce was the third athlete to repeat her 100 meter victory.
