In the final, the Dutch world record holder Blankers-Koen was the top favorite. Local hero Dorothy Manley was most likely to be trusted to challenge the "flying housewife". In fact, the Brit got off to a good start, but Blankers-Koen countered and won with a comfortable margin.
Fanny Blankers-Koen achieved the first Dutch Olympic victory in athletics. For them it was the first of four Olympic victories in London.
Dorothy Manley (GBR) and Shirley Strickland (AUS) won their countries' first medals in this discipline.
