Note: Only the best size has been recorded. The order and length of further attempts in qualification are unknown.

In the javelin throw , as in the shot put and discus throw, the absence of the Soviet throwers was noticeable. They could at least have offered the Austrian Herma Bauma, who dominated the competition, strong competition. However, the result in the javelin throw was significantly better than in the other two throwing disciplines. Bauma improved Tilly Fleischer's Olympic record and stayed only about one meter below the winning distance of the Soviet thrower Klawdija Majutschaja , with whom she had become European champion in 1946 . Bauma, who won the Olympics in Berlin in 1936 , won the gold medal ahead of the Finn Kaisa Parviainen and the Danish Lily Carlstedt.

Herma Bauma won the only Austrian gold medal in athletics to date.
Kaisa Parviainen won the first Finnish medal in the women's javelin.
Lily Carlstedt won the first Danish medal in women's athletics.
