The Australian Olympic champion of 1956 , Betty Cuthbert, suffered from an injury and was eliminated early in the quarter-finals. The favorite role now fell to US runner Wilma Rudolph, who had set the world record in the semifinals .
The 20-year-old African American was in the lead right from the start and won the race with three tenths of a second ahead of the two officially simultaneous runners Dorothy Hyman from Great Britain and Giuseppina Leone from Italy. The class times achieved in the final were not on the best list due to a strong tail wind of 2.75 m / s.
Wilma Rudolph, who was to win two more gold medals in Rome , was called the "black gazelle" because of her running style.
Giuseppina Leone won the first Italian medal over 100 meters .
