Marija Leontjewna Itkina ( Russian Мария Леонтьевна Иткина , English transcription Mariya Itkina ; born February 3, 1932 in Roslavl , Smolensk Oblast ) is a former Belarusian athlete who - starting for the Soviet Union - was successful in the sprint from 1954 to 1964 . The special discipline was the 400 meters , over which she ran multiple world records. She was a member of the Pishchevik Association ( Пищевик ) in Minsk .

Life

She won a total of 32 medals at Soviet championships over 100 meters, 200 meters , 400 meters and 4 times 100 meters . She ran around 30 Soviet records, including eleven over 400 meters. She was the first Soviet female athlete to stay under 24 seconds over 200 meters. She took part in three European championships and won a total of five medals, including four gold. She was less successful at the Olympic Games. She participated three times, but could not win a medal. Itkina is now the chairwoman of the Belarusian Sports Association.

  • 1960 Rome : fourth in each case over 100 m in 11.4 s (victory time of Wilma Rudolph : 11.0 s), over 200 m in 24.7 s (victory time of Wilma Rudolph: 24.0 s) and with the 4 × 100 -m relay in 45.2 s (Marija Itkina as third runner)
  • 1964 Tokyo : Fifth in 54.6 s ( Betty Cuthbert's victory time : 52.0 s)
