The favorite was the US relay, which clearly had the best individual runners. The German team were given good chances, especially when they set the world record in the first round . The German team had injury-related problems, however, as their designated final runner Manfred Germar could not be used. To determine the substitute, there was an elimination race between Manfred Steinbach and Martin Lauer, which the world hurdle record holder Lauer won.

In the final, Bernd Cullmann ran strong as the star runner of the German team and even brought his relay slightly into the lead. Problems arose when the US team changed from Frank Budd to Ray Norton. Norton, who even slowed down slightly, took over the baton clearly behind the transition area. Armin Hary increased the Germans' lead on the back straight, but US runner Stone Johnson almost came close to Walter Mahlendorf in the corner. At the beginning of the home stretch, Lauer was just ahead of Dave Sime, who, however, had one of the fastest final runs. The US relay crossed the finish line in 39.4 seconds (electronically 39.59 s). But the error was already indicated here and led to the disqualification, so there was no new world record. Germany became Olympic champion and once again equalized the existing world record. The squadrons of the Soviet Union and Great Britain moved up to the medal positions.

After seven consecutive US relay victories, there was no medal for the US for the first time since 1912 .

It was Germany's first Olympic victory in the 4 x 100 meter relay .

With the relay win, Armin Hary was the first German athlete to win two gold medals.
