Tjeldbergodden
Tjeldbergodden is an industrial complex in the Norwegian province of Møre og Romsdal , on the west coast across from the island of Hitra . The facility is operated by Equinor (formerly Statoil ) and opened in June 1997.
The complex consists of three components: a terminal for gas supply and factories for gas separation and for the production of methanol .
Methanol factory
The methanol factory is the largest in Europe. When it opened, it was the first in Norway to use natural gas for industrial production on a large scale. It produces around 900,000 tons of methanol annually, which, according to Equinor, corresponds to over 25% of the European production capacity for this liquid and 10% of European consumption.
The gas for the methanol production comes from the Heidrun field in the North Sea. Equinor owns 82.01% of the shares in this facility, the remaining 17.99% is held by ConocoPhillips .
According to Equinor, the system is energy-efficient; the emission of 0.4 tons of carbon dioxide per ton of methanol is low. The annual emission of nitrogen oxides is around 200 tons.
