Walter Mahlendorf

Walter Mahlendorf (born January 4, 1935 in Sarstedt ) is a former German athlete who became Olympic champion in the 4 x 100 meter run with the German relay at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome (39.5 s; together with Bernd Cullmann , Armin Hary and Martin Lauer ; Walter Mahlendorf as the third runner).

The German relay came second in this race, but the US relay leading to the finish was disqualified due to a faulty replacement . In the run-up, the German season had set a world record with 39.5 s, which it equalized in the final.

Walter Mahlendorf also competed in the 100-meter run at these Olympic Games - starting in the joint German team for the Federal Republic - but was eliminated in the preliminary run.

He achieved another success at the European Championships in 1958 , where he won the gold medal with the German relay team (40.2 s, together with Armin Hary , Heinz Fütterer and Manfred Germar ; Walter Mahlendorf as the starting runner).

Mahlendorf started for Hannover 96 . In his playing days he was 1.82 m tall and weighed 81 kg. After his sports career, he became head of the sports and pool office in Bochum .

For his services to sport in Lower Saxony , he was included in the Lower Saxony Sports Honor Gallery of the Lower Saxony Institute for Sports History. He also received the Silver Bay Leaf on December 9, 1960.
