Churandy Martina (born July 3, 1984 in Willemstad , Curaçao , Netherlands Antilles ) is a Dutch sprinter . At the American level he has so far won numerous titles and was allowed to carry the flag of the Netherlands Antilles at the opening ceremony of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens when the nations marched in. He has been working for the Netherlands since 2011 .

Career

The South American junior champion over 100 meters from 2002 was eliminated over this distance at the 2003 World Championships in Paris and in the second round at the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki . Two years later, in 2007 in Osaka , he finished fifth in both the 100 and 200 meters . The 2009 World Championships in Berlin were also unsuccessful for the sprinter. In the pre-run he was eliminated over 100 meters and then no longer competed in his pre-run over 200 meters.

Churandy Martina advanced to the quarter-finals over 100 meters at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and experienced one of his career highlights at the next Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 , where he managed to achieve fourth place in the short distance with a personal best. He even came second over 200 meters, but was then disqualified for crossing the lane markings. The successor silver medalist Shawn Crawford (200 meter winner from Athens) was of the opinion that Martina was faster than himself even when running in accordance with the rules and therefore symbolically presented the medal to the man from the Netherlands Antilles.

Martina has been racing for the Netherlands since 2011 and immediately became the Dutch champion over 100 and 200 meters. At the 2011 World Championships , he was eliminated in the semifinals on both routes. At the European Championships in 2012 , he won over 200 meters in 20.42 seconds ahead of his Dutch compatriot Patrick van Luijk . The next day, both won the title with Brian Mariano and Giovanni Codrington with the 4 x 100 meter relay.

Martina studied Civil Engineering ( Civil Engineering ) at the University of Texas at El Paso .

Domino Day

On November 14th, 2008 Martina was a guest at Domino Day in the Dutch city of Leeuwarden and took part in an unusual event. In the course of the motto "Celebrating 10 years of Domino Day - Breaking more World Records than ever", the record of the fastest falling stones should also be broken. The athlete sprinted over a distance of 30 meters against dominoes falling in a chain reaction and won in 3.81 s. It was four tenths faster than the falling stones.
