Shawn Crawford (born January 14, 1978 in Van Wyck , South Carolina ) is an American athlete . He was indoor world champion in 2001 and Olympic champion in the 200-meter run in 2004 . In 2013 he was banned for violating the doping regulations.

Life

Crawford has been one of the world's best sprinters since the 2001 season . He ran world class times over 100 and 200 meters. However, he was able to celebrate his greatest successes on the 200-meter course. He became indoor world champion in Lisbon in 2001 . At the World Championships in Edmonton , he won the bronze medal over 200 meters. In 2003 he was eliminated from the World Indoor Championships.

In 2004 Crawford won the silver medal over 60 meters at the World Indoor Championships in Budapest . At the Olympic Games in Athens , he competed to win three medals: over 100 meters, 200 meters and in the 4 x 100 meter relay . The first start over 100 meters brought him only fourth place behind Maurice Greene . He was then able to live up to his favorite position over 200 meters. He won the gold medal with one of the best times ever: 19.79 s. The 4-by-100-meter relay was supposed to bring the second gold medal on the last day of the Athens track and field competitions, but the US quartet was sensationally beaten by the British relay and Crawford was awarded a silver medal.

In 2005 Craword started at the World Championships over 100 meters, but retired in the semifinals. In the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing won Crawford the silver medal over 200 meters, and at the 2009 world championships in Berlin , he was over the same distance in fourth. He was the American 200 meter champion in 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2009. In 2004 he won over 60 meters indoors.

After Crawford violated the obligation to report his whereabouts three times within 18 months in order to be available for doping tests, he was banned from the US anti-doping agency USADA for two years in April 2013 .

Shawn Crawford is 1.81 m tall, weighs 80 kg and trained with Bob Kersee . In 2010 he married the hurdler Ginnie Powell . He is studying theme park and tourism management and also made headlines when he ran a 100-meter run against a giraffe and a zebra for an American television station in 2003 . He could win against the giraffe, he lost against the zebra.
