Ralph Cook Craig (born June 21, 1889 in Detroit , Michigan , † July 21, 1972 in Lake George , New York ) was an American athlete . At the Olympic Games in Stockholm in 1912 he was two-time Olympic champion in the 100 and 200-meter run .

biography

Craig was initially a hurdler . It was only during his studies at the University of Michigan that he switched to sprinting. In 1910 he secured a title at the IC4A championships for the first time over 220 yards . He was able to defend his title the following year.

In the US eliminations for the Olympic Games, Craig qualified for Stockholm. Over 100 meters, Craig's compatriot Donald Lippincott , who had set a new world record in the heats with 10.6 seconds , was the favorite. After a total of seven false starts, however, Craig won in 10.8 seconds. Lippincott was only third. Craig and Lippincott also fought an exciting fight over 200 meters. And again Craig gave his opponent the disadvantage and became Olympic champion for the second time in the time of 21.7 s. Despite his success, Craig was not placed in the US 4 x 100 meter relay , but was then disqualified during the race.

Immediately after the Olympics, Craig retired from active competitive sports. In 1948, at the age of 59, Craig took part in the Olympic Games again as a substitute for the US sailing team. Despite not participating in the competitions, Craig had the honor of leading the American team as the flag bearer during the opening ceremony.
