In 1285 there was a fiefdom that the Lords of Dahn had received from the Hornbach Monastery and the Speyer diocese .

From 1798 to 1814, when the Palatinate was part of the French Republic (until 1804) and then part of the Napoleonic Empire , Hinterweidenthal was incorporated into the canton of Dahn . In 1815 the place Austria was added. Just one year later, Hinterweidenthal moved to the Kingdom of Bavaria . From 1818 the place was part of the Landkommissariat Pirmasens , which was converted into a district office in 1862. On June 17, 1849 Hinterweidenthal was partially the scene of the battle near Rinnthal ; a Palatinate Volkswehr battalion had withdrawn from the community to Rinnthal in front of the Prussian troops.

In 1939 Hinterweidenthal was incorporated into the district of Pirmasens (from 1997 district of Südwestpfalz ) . After the Second World War , the municipality within the French occupation zone became part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate. In the course of the first Rhineland-Palatinate administrative reform , the place became part of the newly created community of Hauenstein . On January 1, 1976, the nearby hamlet of Kaltenbach , which had previously belonged to Wilgartswiesen, was reassigned to Hinterweidenthal.

Hinterweidenthal has been connected to the rail network since 1875 via the Landau – Rohrbach railway line. The Hinterweidenthal-Kaltenbach train station was built in the Kaltenbach district, which was then part of Wilgartswiesen , and was later renamed Kaltenbach (Palatinate) and finally got its current name Hinterweidenthal .

In the Hinterweidenthal Ost train station, built in 1911 , the Wieslauterbahn , a single-track branch line that opened in the same year, branches off to Bundenthal-Rumbach , which also has a nearby stop at Hinterweidenthal Ort . Plans to tie the line through to Weißenburg were thwarted by the outbreak of the First World War. Passenger traffic on the Wieslauterbahn ceased in 1966 and 1976; As a result, the branch station for passenger transport was closed. Freight traffic was abandoned in 1995. Since 1997, it has been used for regular excursions on Sundays and public holidays in the summer months. The route was temporarily used by the city of Dahn for an inner-city relief road.
