The Salzbach , first called Kröppenbach and then Buchbach , is around 17 km long and is the longest tributary of the Lauter , which is called Wieslauter here on the upper reaches . It flows in the northwestern Wasgau , a low mountain range that is formed by the southern part of the Palatinate Forest (state of Rhineland-Palatinate ) and the northern part of the Vosges ( Bas-Rhin and Moselle departments ).

course

Nominally, the Salzbach does not have its own source, because the 10 km long Kröppenbach / Buchbach, which is hydrologically considered to be the Salzbach source, and the Storrbach, which flows in from the right , come together to form the watercourse of this name between the villages of Langmühle and Salzwoog below the Salzwooger Teufelstisch . The Kröppenbach / Buchbach has its source at the Hohen Kopf (467 m), the 5 km long Storrbach at the Großer Spießkopf (414 m).

After the confluence, the Salzbach forms the boundary between Lemberg and Hinterweidenthal for the remaining 7 km of its course , then between Ruppertsweiler and Hinterweidenthal. In the hamlet of Salzwoog, it flows through the small reservoir of the same name . At the height of the hamlet of Kaltenbach, which belongs to Hinterweidenthal, and below the Kaltenbacher Teufelstisch , the Salzbach flows into the Wieslauter from the right.

history

The name of the creek does not refer to the salinity, but to the former customs station Salzwoog, where salt traders had to pay a tax when crossing the border between the territories of the Speyer Monastery and the Duchy of Pfalz-Zweibrücken . The former border crossing at Salzwoog was on the bridge over the Salzbach, which today leads the state roads 487 (Hinterweidenthal– Fischbach ) and 486 (Lemberg– Dahn ) across the water.
