Salzwoog is a district of the Lemberg community in the Rhineland-Palatinate district of Südwestpfalz .

Geographical location

Salzwoog is located 4 km east of the main town on the border with the town of Dahn at 230  m altitude in Wasgau , as the southern part of the Palatinate Forest and the northern part of the Vosges are also called.

history

The nucleus of the place was the Salzwooger Hof , which was located on the historic salt road that led from Lorraine to the Rhine , and at the same time on a Woog , a small reservoir in the Salzbach that enabled a sawmill to be operated. Here in the Salzwooger Hof there was a customs station with salt scales. The court also historically belonged to Lemberg, which was located in the Lemberg office of the same name and there in the Lemberg official school . The office - and thus also the Salzwooger Hof - initially belonged to the County of Zweibrücken-Bitsch , from 1570 to the County of Hanau-Lichtenberg , from 1736 to the Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt , from 1794 to France , from 1816 to Bavaria ( Rhine district ) and from 1946 Rhineland-Palatinate . Economy and Infrastructure

economy

The main economic branch of the hamlet , which emerged from the Salzwooger Hof, was forestry due to its location in the southwest of the Palatinate Forest . In the second half of the 20th century, the place became more and more a residential community and also opened up to tourism . In 2008 Salzwoog had 280 inhabitants. The only local association is the Dorfgemeinschaft Salzwoog e. V.

traffic

Hinterweidenthal is 5 km to the northeast ; From there, Pirmasens (10 km) to the west and Landau (36 km) to the east can be reached via federal highway 10 . The B 427 (Hinterweidenthal– Bad Bergzabern ) runs east of Salzwoog, and Dahn is reached after 6 km.

Attractions

Above all, the area east of Salzwoog, the Dahner Felsenland , is rich in bizarre rock formations made of red sandstone , which include the Teufelstisch near Hinterweidenthal and the Jungfernsprung in Dahn. A smaller counterpart to the Hinterweidenthaler is the similar-looking but smaller Salzwooger Teufelstisch , which is located west of the village at an altitude of 320  m . In the Middle Ages, castles were built on numerous mountains in the region, some of which have been restored, such as the Trifels Imperial Castle ; the Berwartstein is even inhabited. Local legends exist for many of the sights, some of which have also found their way into literature.
