Location of Kaltenbach in Rhineland-Palatinate

The hamlet of Kaltenbach is a part of the municipality of Hinterweidenthal in the Rhineland-Palatinate district of Südwestpfalz .

In the extreme north of the Wasgau , which includes the southern part of the Palatinate Forest and the northern part of the Vosges , and directly north of the main municipality, Kaltenbach is located at around 250  m above sea level in the Lauter valley , which is called Wieslauter here on the upper reaches .

Waters

The hamlet takes its name from the approximately 1.5 km long Kaltenbach , which flows into the Salzbach from the left in the west of the district . 200 m below the Salzbach reaches the Wieslauter as a right tributary.

history

Until 1975 the hamlet belonged to the community of Wilgartswiesen , 9 km away , before it was added to the neighboring Hinterweidenthal on January 1, 1976 as part of an administrative reform.

Immediately to the west of the hamlet, the Teufelstisch rises on a ridge at a height of 284  m . There is a 14 meter high red sandstone rocks, like a one-legged table is formed and as one of the landmarks of the Pfalz applies.

In the north of the residential area, federal highway 10 runs from Landau to Pirmasens . The B 427 branches off to the south, which originates here and leads via Dahn to Bad Bergzabern .

Further north and above the residential area, the Landau – Rohrbach railway , which runs parallel to the B 10, crosses the Kaltenbach district from east to west. When the line opened, your stop was initially called Hinterweidenthal-Kaltenbach .

In the course of the construction of the Wieslauterbahn (via Dahn to Bundenthal-Rumbach ) a new branch station , later renamed several times, was built around 2 km to the east ; then the old stop was renamed Kaltenbach (Pfalz) . After the passenger traffic on the - meanwhile reactivated - Wieslauterbahn had been stopped, it was given its still valid name Hinterweidenthal .
