journalism

Kerstin Grether wrote articles about indie pop for Spex while she was still at school in the 1990s . She was then influenced by the British star columnist and punk icon Julie Burchill . Burchill wrote groundbreaking polemics at a young age about Madonna , John Lennon , the working class, post-feminism, and teen idols. After graduating from high school, Grether got a job as a culture editor at Spex. There she was initiated into the art of writing about pop and politics by Clara Drechsler and Diedrich Diederichsen .

Kerstin Grether also studied philosophy and English . She was a culture editor during the cultural studies phase at Spex, where she was in charge of the amplifier section , which brought together art, pop, politics and theory. She also campaigned for the US riot grrrl movement. In her articles she provided information about the diverse networks and discourses that this suddenly created for young women in Europe and North America. She also wrote articles for the art magazine Texte zur Kunst .

This is often emphasized in articles and reviews of Kerstin Grether's work. The cultural scientist Katja Kauer also serves Grether as one of the leading protagonists in this country. In its anniversary issue for the fifth anniversary of November 2013, the pop-feminist Missy Magazine highlights Kerstin Grether's early journalistic role in importing deconstructivist, feminist theories.

In the noughties, Kerstin Grether worked as a freelancer a. a. for the magazines Intro and Frieze , wrote pop-cultural editorials for the Frankfurter Rundschau and moderation texts for the TV station MTV . She also wrote sporadically for Die Zeit , Berliner Tagesspiegel , Badische Zeitung and other publications.

Since her first success as a writer in the mid-noughties, Kerstin Grether has rarely published journalistic texts. Since 2012 she has been writing the (band) blog Freundinnen der Nacht , as well as regular articles on music and literature for Spex since 2013.
