Yes, Panik is an Austrian music group from Burgenland , now based in Berlin , that was founded at the end of 2005.

history

Early phase

The group Ja, Panik was established in November 2005 by Andreas Spechtl , Stefan Pabst, Christian and Manuel Treppo Dinhof, former members of the rock band Burgenland Flashbax in Vienna founded. At this point, the production of the first, untitled album was almost complete. A fragment from the text of the last track on the record was adapted as the band name.

This was recorded, produced and mixed by b.kantine alias Thomas Pronai ( Garish , Beautiful Kantine Band) in the Cselley Mühle in Oslip . However, drummer Dinhof left the group after the album was released in March 2006 and so the release concert in Vienna was his first and only one with Ja, Panik . The album was released in Austria by schoenwetter schallplatten and in Germany by tenstaag . Dinhof was replaced by Sebastian Janata .

With Ob I deserve that, Between 2 & 4 and Like a Hurricane , the singles from the album, positions in various indie and radio charts were booked.

On the first tour through Austria and Germany in May, the group Ja, Panik got to know the Berlin group Britta . A friendship that has lasted to date developed. On this tour Thomas Schleicher was a roadie with Ja, Panik . Shortly afterwards he played his first concert as a guitarist and has been a permanent member ever since.

The Taste and the Money

In autumn 2006 Ja, Panik arranged and played the piece Ich sprenge all Ketten for the second album Kitsch and Revo by the Viennese choir Stimmgewitter Augustin . At this time work began on the second long player. This time it was produced by Ja, Panik himself, recorded by the then live technician of the group Lukas Virits and mixed again by b.kantine. Large parts of the material were recorded in the shared apartment of the members of the group, the so-called Ja, Panik -Zentrale, in Vienna. The Holy-As-Hell-Satanic-Panic-Choir took part in the last song.

The album was finally released under the name The Taste and the Money in October 2007 in Austria on schoenwetter and in April 2008 in Germany and Switzerland on Alfred Hilsberg's label ZickZack . Shortly before the album was released, the group published an explanatory program in 6 points on the Internet and in the form of small yellow booklets reminiscent of Reclam books (according to FAZ, “partly an artistic manifesto, partly a joke-paradoxical distancing from pop criticism and discourse- Rock ”) and thus showed its conceptual side for the first time.

With The Taste and the Money , the group Ja, Panik achieved for the first time a major stir in professional and critical circles. The album was described by the renowned music magazine SPEX as the "most important German-language record since Blumfeld's L'Etat Et Moi " and was ranked number 3 in the 2008 album charts, while the track "I bring myself in shape" was ranked number 5 on the corresponding single charts .

The fear and the money

In the summer of 2008 the group started demo recordings for the next album, which was recorded in December in the Berlin Chez Cherie studio by Moses Schneider , known for his work with Tocotronic , the Fehlfarben and the Beatsteaks .

At this point in time, singer Andreas Spechtl had already moved from Vienna to Berlin. The rest of the group stayed in the so-called headquarters in Vienna for the time being.

In May 2009 Ja, Panik on the Internet released a much discussed video about Alles hin hin , the first single of the upcoming new album.

After the summer, the entire group finally moved to Berlin and moved into a shared apartment again.

The new album The Angst and the Money was released in September on the Berlin label Staatsakt and confirmed the group's status as one of the best bands in the German-speaking independent sector. The cover was a portrait of the group, painted by the Austrian artist Franz Amman, in the original a 2 × 2.5 m oil painting.

At the same time as the album, the medium NJURE - organ for detoxification of the group Ja, Panik , a magazine with collected articles from u. a. Yes, Panik himself and Tex Rubinowitz .

Shortly after Jochen Distelmeyer's video for the single Lass uns Liebe sein , Ja, Panik published a video without comment ( sorry ) that obviously refers to Distelmeyer's. Distelmeyer, former singer of Blumfeld , is repeatedly given as a reference or influence for Yes, Panic . The group Ja, Panik did not express itself seriously in a single interview about their video and thus left it unclear whether it was a parody, an homage or a criticism of any comparisons with Blumfeld.

In January 2010 Ja, Panik founded the label Nein, Gelassenheit as a sub-label of their record company Staatsakt. The first publication was a split 7 ″ vinyl with the Berlin artist and radical chansonnier Hans Unstern . Unstern then covers the Ja, Panik piece As I have . Yes, Panic, in turn, interpret Hans Unstern's Paris . The cover shows the group Ja, Panik naked in the same pose as in the painting by Franz Amman, a face portrait of Hans Unstern is projected onto the body of the group.

Further publications on No, Calmness are Hans Unstern's debut album Kratz Dich Raus and Schätzmeister's The Wurst And The Money . Unstern accompanied the group Ja, Panik on their tour in the spring and has since been a tour guide at all Ja, Panik concerts .

For the famous Danube Festival in Krems, Austria, Ja, Panik - Eine Detoxung was announced in April 2010 . In fact, there was no concert of the group, just a sound check, followed by a play with Christiane Rösinger , Hans Unstern and Peter Schachinger.

In October 2010 the group Ja, Panik was on the road for ten days in Africa and played concerts in Alexandria , Cairo (Egypt) and Khartoum (Sudan).

DMD KIU LIDT

In November 2010 the group returned to the Chez Cherie Studio to record a new album with Moses Schneider. This was published on April 15, 2011 and is called DMD KIU LIDT , “The manifestation of capitalism in our lives is sadness”. It interweaves German and English text passages even more closely than the previous albums; On the text sheet enclosed with the CD, the languages ​​are interchanged, i.e. passages sung in German are printed in English and vice versa. The album was enthusiastically received by the critics. The 14-minute title track DMD KIU LIDT was voted fifth in the “100 most important Austrian pop songs” by the pop culture magazine The Gap in 2020 as part of the AustroTOP ranking.

In October 2011, the group published the book Writings - First Volume via No, Calmness and The Big Colorful Cookbook by the group Yes, Panik .

The film DMD KIU LIDT by Austrian director Georg Tiller premiered at the 2014 Berlinale.

Libertatia

The album Libertatia was released on January 31, 2014. Since the departure of Christian Treppo and Thomas Schleicher, the band has only consisted of three members. The album is named after the possibly fictional pirate colony Libertatia , which could have been founded by pirates on the northern tip of Madagascar in the late 17th century . Slavery had already been abolished there, and there was freedom of religion and women's rights. According to singer Andreas Spechtl, the band would like to borrow the term from the past and fill it with their thing. On December 6, 2013, the title song Libertatia was released as the first video from the album.

Awards

Yes, Panik was nominated in 2009 for the Amadeus Award , the largest Austrian music prize in the Alternative / Rock category, in 2010 in the categories Song of the Year ( Alles hin, hin, hin ) and Alternative and in 2012 in the categories Alternative and Album of the Year ( DMD KIU LIDT ). According to Spex editor Jan Kedves, the group Ja, Panik could not be nominated for the critics' award of the German music award Echo in 2012 due to their Austrian citizenship. In 2014 the group Ja, Panik received the VUT Indie Award in the Best Act category by beating Die Höchste Eisenbahn, Moderat and The Notwist.
