Garish ( spelling garish ) is an Austrian indie pop band that was founded in 1997 and is one of the best-known representatives of German-language music outside of the musical "mainstream". As a trademark, in addition to the often idiosyncratic instrumentalization, the lyrical approach of the singer Thomas Jarmer to his texts, which are very often encrypted and mixed with metaphors. The band is now releasing their records in the entire German-speaking area.

Career

Garish have been nominated a total of seven times for the Amadeus Austrian Music Award : 2001, 2003 and 2005 each in the category “FM4 Alternative Act”, 2010 for “Best Album”, as “Artist of the Year - Alternative” and for the “FM4 Award” "And 2015.

The musicians originally come from the area around the city of Mattersburg in Burgenland . Thomas Jarmer (singer, lyricist, composer) also works as a film music composer - for example for Elisabeth Scharang's world war drama Maybe in Another Life . Christoph Jarmer's solo releases, which he has been bringing out under the pseudonym "Esteban's" since 2008, reached number 1 in the FM4 charts ( Time Bomb , 2012) and a nomination for the FM4 Award 2013 , which was part of the Amadeus Austrian Music Award is presented. Drummer Markus Perner works as a live and studio musician in numerous productions in Austria and Germany and is one of the core members of Thees Uhlmann's band . Julian Schneeberger runs side projects such as "Auf Pomali" and is also a guitarist for Bo Candy & His Broken Hearts. Bassist Kurt Grath is also a member of the Haydn Orchestra

In 2010 the work of the band was honored with a prize from the "Burgenland Foundation - Theodor Kery". In 2006 the radio play crew feat. Garish took 3rd place in the protest song contest with the song Vermögen .

history

The five founding members (Thomas Jarmer, his younger brother Christoph, Julian Schneeberger, Kurt Grath and Markus Perner) met while they were still at school and sometimes played together in different line-ups before the band Garish was founded in 1997. As early as 1999 - still in their teenage years - the group had their first major festival appearances (including Forestglade Festival) and played as support for well-known artists such as Lauryn Hill or the Red Hot Chili Peppers at concerts in Austria.

At the beginning of 2000, the debut album Amaurose pur (PAM Records / edel) was released in Austria , and the group received first media attention. The opinion-forming radio station FM4 subsequently proved to be a great supporter of the group with the inclusion of the title Decorative in the airplay lists. The German branch of the music broadcaster MTV nominated the band in 2001 for the "MTV brand: newcomer" award. At the Amadeus Austrian Music Award, Garish received a nomination in the "FM4 Alternative Act" category, which was awarded for the first time.

The notable successes with the debut followed in 2002 with the release of the album Wo die Nacht tells vom Tag (Austria: Pate Records / edel, D / CH: Wallpaper Records / Indigo) - for the first time in Germany and Switzerland. During this time, the titles Silber and Zum Mond became long-running hits in the alternative radio segment. A 12 "EP with seven remixes was released for the song Draußen fischt im Eis , giving the band entry into the Austrian club charts. Several tours and festival appearances in Hungary, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany and Austria follow. Among other things, the band was the first Austrian and German-speaking band to be invited to the "Eurosonic" showcase festival in Groningen (Netherlands) in 2003. The band was also nominated for the Amadeus Austrian Music Award for their second album .

In 2004 the album Senders on the move followed . The German Musikexpress called the record “a masterpiece”, the Rolling Stone called it “music for a different reality”. For Die Presse the band was “no longer an insider tip with this album at the latest”, for “Concerto” it was “probably Austria's most important pop band”. The title Noch auf See reached number one in the FM4 charts and also topped the hit lists of Radio Soundportal 979FM (Graz) and toxic.fm in Switzerland. Another nomination for an Amadeus Austrian Music Award in the category “FM4 Alternative Act” followed - but for the third time the band came away empty-handed.

Also in 2004, Thomas and Christoph Jarmer, Julian Schneeberger, Kurt Grath and Markus Perner founded the label "Schoenwetter Schallplatten" together with their long-term partners, the producer Thomas Pronai and manager Hannes Tschürtz. The first release in August of that year was the album Straight Outta Schilfgürtel by Flashbax, from which the group Ja, Panik later emerged. In 2007 the band members withdrew as shareholders from the company, but the label continued to exist under the umbrella of the Tschürtz music company Ink Music and continues to release the group's records.

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the "Jeunesse" concert series, Garish made guest appearances in 2005 in the Haydn Hall in Esterházy Palace (Eisenstadt) and were supported by the Joseph Haydn Orchestra and choirs. In the course of the "Thought Year" of the Republic of Austria (60 years of the Second Republic, 50 years of the State Treaty) Garish appeared in the Radiokulturhaus together with Arik Brauer and interpreted his "Köpferl im Sand" as well as a version of Falco 's "Junge Römer"

In 2006 the band took over the musical design of the film octopus alarm from Elisabeth Scharang and also played live during the film premiere at the Berlinale . In the same year they recorded a new album and finalized it in Hamburg with Dinesh Ketelsen (Fink). Parade will be released in March 2007 - it is the only album the band has released on Universal Music. For the first time the band reached the official Austrian album charts. After completing the associated tour, some band members devote themselves to their own musical side projects.

After a long hiatus, Garish got together again in 2009. Together with Thomas Pronai, who had artistically supervised all the recordings before the Parade , the band's fifth studio album, entitled Wenn dir das mein Liebe nicht proviert, was recorded, which was released in February 2010. The audible break in style on this album meets with approval from both critics and audiences. During this time the band acquired a much more differentiated reputation, especially as a live band. The invitation issued by the band Element of Crime to a joint concert at the Burgtheater in Vienna in 2011 or appearances at international industry festivals such as the Spot Festival in Aarhus, Denmark and the Reeperbahn Festival in Hamburg are evidence of this.

Trumpf , the band's sixth studio album , was released on February 7, 2014 . It was announced in late autumn 2013 with the video for Auf den Dächern by director Christoph Kuschnig. Trump brought Garish a top 20 position in the charts for the first time. For the album, the band was nominated for an Amadeus Award for the seventh time in total (in the “Alternative Pop / Rock” category). In May 2015, the band announced the separation from their founding member and long-time guitarist Christoph Jarmer.

Over the summer and autumn of 2016, the band devoted themselves to the recordings of their seventh studio album, which was released in February 2017 under the title "Come on black cat" and at the same time marked the 20th anniversary of the band.
