Protest song contest
The protest song contest is a critical music event that was first held on February 12, 2004 on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the February 12 riots in the Rabenhoftheater Vienna. Protest songs that deal with (social) political issues such as environmental protection , deadline solutions , the surveillance state , animal welfare , globalization or xenophobia are evaluated .
The common idea for this came from the director of the Rabenhoftheater Thomas Gratzer , the dramaturge Roman Freilaßner and the theater scholar Gerald C. Stocker , who wanted to create a new platform for the contemporary protest song with this event.
In 2008 a compilation of songs from 2004 to 2007 was published, followed in 2013 by a second compilation of songs from 2008 to 2012. On the occasion of the tenth anniversary, a “best of” concert with former finalists took place in 2013.
In 2010 the protest song contest winner pauT presented his winning number “sepp haT said, we have to light everything” at the EXPO 2010 in the Austria Pavilion in Shanghai (China).
In 2015, the winners Rammelhof caused a real hype when their winning song Wladimir (Put Put Putin) became a YouTube hit within a few days, especially in Ukraine.
In 2016, the winning song "Testament", which Sarah Lesch wrote for her son, caused an unwanted reaction. The song, which is supposed to prepare Lesch's child for an uncertain future, was widely distributed on the Internet and was also shared by right-wing populist sides and right-wing extremist groups. The musician however promptly distanced herself vehemently from this appropriation.
procedure
The selection procedure for the participants in the protest song contest has been maintained since its beginning. First of all, a four-person committee ( Mario Rossori , Roman Freilaßner, Gerald C. Stocker and a representative from FM4) selects 25 applications from around 300 musical submissions from Germany and abroad. The interpreters determined in this way then compete in a concert competition (pre-finals) for entry into the final. A jury assesses the performances of the participants and decides on their progress.
The ten finalists will then present their songs live on February 12th in the Rabenhoftheater Vienna, where again a six-member jury made up of musicians, journalists and politically committed people will decide on the victory by voting on points. In recent years the jury has included Sigi Maron , Barbara Rett , Hans Platzgumer , Doris Knecht , Martin Blumenau , Birgit Denk , Peter Hein , Clara Luzia , Mieze Medusa , Stefan Weber , Hansi Lang , Andrea Dusl , Electric Indigo , Barbara Blaha , Binder & Krieglstein , Ernst Molden , Ronnie Urini , Daniel Wisser , Skero , Mirjam Unger , Clara Blume , Christine Hödl , Didi Bruckmayr , Voodoo Jürgens , Stefanie Sargnagel and Peter Paul Skrepek. Since 2014, the public has been able to vote as the 7th official juror via online voting.
The event was moderated from 2004 to 2013 by Dirk Stermann . In 2004, 2005 and 2007 he was supported by Christoph Grissemann . Michael Ostrowski has taken on this task since 2014 . The Austrian radio station FM4 broadcasts the event every year live on the radio and as a live stream via the Internet. Over the past few years there have been concerts within the framework of the protest song contest, at which numerous well-known musicians and bands such as Willi Resetarits , Sigi Maron , Ronnie Urini , Dominik Nostitz, Denk , Thalija, Lederhosen Lucile, Die Vamummtn , Roman Gregory , Bastian Bandt and Lukas Meister performed. In 2015 the final was shown for the first time on ORF III .

Participants in the pre-finals (Top 25)
The pre-finals took place in the Vienna main library in 2004, in 2005 and 2006 they moved to the Vienna Congress House for reasons of space and since 2007 they moved to the House of Encounters (Rudolfsheim). The evening was moderated in 2004 and 2005 by Fritz Ostermayer and from 2006 to 2010 by Mathias Zsutty (FM4). Michael Fiedler (FM4) took over this task in 2011 and 2012, Gerlinde Lang (FM4) followed him in 2013 (again in 2020), and in 2014 Roland Gratzer and Hannes Duscher (FM4) led the evening. From 2015 to 2018 Lukas Tagwerker moderated the pre-finals. In 2019 the pre-final took place for the first time in the RadioKulturhaus and was moderated by Conny Lee.
