Voodoo Jürgens ( real name David Öllerer , born August 2, 1983 in Tulln on the Danube ) is an Austrian songwriter . His trademark are the black humor texts in the Viennese dialect . Musically he is attributed to the Austropop .

biography

David Öllerer was born and raised in Tulln. When he was seven years old, his father started a prison sentence , which led to a rift between father and son. After finishing school, he began an apprenticeship as a confectioner at the court confectioner Demel , which he did not complete. At 19, he lived in Vienna. After dropping out of his apprenticeship and studies, he later worked as a gardener in a cemetery , as his music wasn't enough to make a living.

Öllerer was the co-founder and singer of the fairly successful garage rock band Die Eternias , a Britpop band that was formed in the first half of the 2000s . The Austrian accent was clearly audible in his English singing. With him two studio albums and an EP were released. The members of the group gave themselves new pseudonyms with the release of each album , Öllerer's last stage name was Voodoo Jürgens . At some point he switched to songwriting and dialect and thus landed his first hit in 2016: Roughly clear the dead .

Öllerer lives in Vienna . He has a daughter, but does not live with the child's mother; he has reconciled with his father in the meantime.

Musical creation

After Die Eternias ended in 2014, Öllerer started his solo career under his last pseudonym Voodoo Jürgens. This is a corruption of the name of Udo Jürgens , an Austrian pop singer. With his songs in the Viennese dialect, to which he accompanies himself on the guitar, he mainly performed in pubs . He made his first major public appearance on the Nordbahnhof area . He became known to a national audience through the youth radio station FM4 . In the music video for Gib mir alles by the Viennese band Wanda , Voodoo Jürgens had a guest appearance and was signed by Wanda's management. In May 2016, his first single, Heite grob ma Tote aus , was released, which reached number 1 on FM4's radio charts. In autumn 2016, the debut album Ansa Woar followed on Lotterlabel, the label project of Problembär founder Stefan Redelsteiner. In addition to Austrian musicians such as Der Nino from Vienna and Ja, Panik , the actress Eva Billisich also contributed to the album . It reached number 1 in the Austrian charts . At the Amadeus Awards 2017 he was awarded in the Alternative category.

The Musikexpress described Voodoo Jürgens as the "Austro-Pop hype of the hour",
The Music Information Center Austria characterizes its music as "anti- folk for Beisl".
"Voodoo Jürgens is considered a particularly hot share of local pop music" - ORF

At the gala event 60 years of Wiener Stadthalle "BEST OF AUSTRIA MEETS CLASSIC" on June 21, 2018 he was one of the artists of the event. He sang the song Gitti in a duet with Marianne Mendt , accompanied by the Max Steiner Orchestra under the direction of Christian Kolonovits .

At the end of June 2018, Voodoo Jürgens & Haberer played on the Danube Island Festival on the FM4 stage . The Haberer were "Die Ansa Panier" with the musicians Alicia Edelweiß ( accordion ), David Schweighart ( drums ), Bernd Lichtscheidl ( piano , organ) and Martin Dvorak ( double bass ) as well as Andrej Prozorov ( clarinet ), Katarina Trenk (from Sex Jams ) , Ernst Molden and Der Nino from Vienna.
