Cynotilapia axelrodi is a cichlid which the rock litoral in the northern part of the East African Lake Malawi in Nkhata Bay occurs and Chirombo Point. The species was named after the American ichthyologist Herbert R. Axelrod .
features
Cynotilapia axelrodi becomes about 8 to 10 cm long, the female remains smaller. The body is slightly slimmer than that of Cynotilapia afra . Males are bluish gray, sexually mature, dominant males are brightly blue. The back is darker, the belly yellowish. There are 7 to 9 dark transverse bars on the sides of the body, which get weaker and weaker from front to back. The dorsal fin is white-gray to gray and has a yellow border. The black-lined anal fin is yellow-gray and whitish to transparent behind. There are one or two egg spots there. The caudal fin is also yellow-gray and has black edges above and below. The pelvic fins are gray, their first rays black with white tips. Females are more brownish, their dorsal fin is gray with a yellow border, the anal fin is more yellowish than that of the males.

Way of life
Cynotilapia axelrodi lives in the rocky littoral and above the sand zones between rocks at depths of 10 to 20 meters and, although it belongs to the Mbuna , feeds not on growth but mainly on plankton. Like almost all Malawi cichlids, Cynotilapia axelrodi is a mouthbrooder .
