|
Nkhata Bay is a port city in Malawi . It has 14,274 inhabitants (2018 census). It is located on Lake Malawi and is regularly called by the MS Ilala.
At the same time it is the capital of the district of the same name , which has an area of 4071 km² and 164,761 inhabitants. This district essentially comprises the hillside between Lake Malawi and the chain of the Viphya Mountains . Tea and coffee, two of Malawi's most important export goods, are intensively grown here. Like the areas on the lake to the south of it, the city is connected to the national power grid, which extends to Rumphi at the southern end of the Nyika plateau and national park. A road leads from Mzuzu to Nkhata Bay and from there to Nkhotakota .
Like Cape MacLear, Nkatha Bay is the main backpacker destination on Lake Malawi. There are two hotels and a few hostels. Among other things, kayaks, windsurfing, restaurants, barbecues and handicrafts are offered.
