Rumphi , is the capital of the Rumphi District ( Rumpi Boma ). Rumphi is a town with 22,538 inhabitants (Census 2018) in the Northern Region in Malawi . The city is located at an altitude of 1200 meters at the southern end of the Nyika plateau in a tobacco growing area . Numerous dry storage facilities are located on the slopes west of the city. Rumphi is connected to the national power grid, the route of which runs slightly off the Mzuzu - Karonga highway behind the narrow and rugged valley of the southern Rukuru over the heights of the Viphya Mountains . The city has an airstrip, elementary and secondary schools, a hospital, a weekly market, a supermarket and a bank.
Rumphi is the administrative center of the district of the same name , which is 4769 km² and has 169,112 inhabitants (as of 2008). The district is comparatively sparsely populated. The settlement areas are in the west and south close to the district border. The streets of the district are not paved. West of the city of Rumphi is the Vwaza Marsh Game Reserve .
