The Southern Rukuru is a river in Malawi .
course
It rises to the west of the southern end of the Viphya Mountains at 1204 m , flows about 300 km to the north and northwest, to flow into Lake Malawi at Mlowe (Rukuru Point) .
The Southern Rukuru is with the Dwangwa , the Bua and the Lilongwe one of the four main rivers that drain the central highlands of Malawi. All watercourses of the Viphya highlands flow into the southern Rukuru, which drains an area of 958 km².
In the highlands, the river flows through marshy floodplains at a gradient of only 100 m, before flowing into the Kazunisee in the Vwaza Marsh Game Reserve , which is known for its high population of hippos. Behind the town of Rumphi , the river plunges through narrow gorges, where it takes up a lot of sediments. The river has water all year round.
fishing
According to the FAO, the rivers Bua , Dwangwa , Lilongwe , Lufira , Northern Rukuru , Songwe and Southern Rukuru together have a fishing potential of 15,000 t per year. Between 4,000 and 17,000 t are actually caught.
