The Northern Rukuru is a river in the Northern Region of Malawi .

course

It rises on the Nyika plateau and flows into Lake Malawi after about 100 km at Karonga . The river has water all year round.

The river drains one of Malawi's most important rainfall areas with an average of 1140 mm of rain per year.

economy

In Kayelekera in Northern-Rukuru Basin, a Karoo -Reliktbecken, there is a uranium deposit , which contains estimated about 11,500 tonnes of uranium and from 2009 to 2014 in open pit mined was.

According to the FAO, the rivers Bua , Dwangwa , Lilongwe , Lufira , Northern Rukuru, Songwe and Southern Rukuru together have a fishing potential of 15,000 t per year. Between 4,000 and 17,000 t are actually caught.
