Cape MacLear on Lake Malawi
|
Cape Maclear is a village in Malawi northwest of Monkey Bay on the shores of Lake Malawi .
history
The region in which Cape Maclear lies today was discovered from a European perspective in 1859 by David Livingstone , who named it after his friend, the astronomer Thomas Maclear .
economy
Cape Maclear has developed into a resort especially for young backpackers. Some cheap guesthouses are crowded on the narrow beach and offer not only simple rooms but also tent sites. There is a privately run hospital that cares for the locals. To the west of the village is Lake Malawi National Park , which can be explored with rented canoes or on foot. Two diving centers are located directly on the beach. Many young men from the village work in the tourism business, sell home-made jewelry and cannabis , organize barbecues on the beach or row tourists to the offshore islands.
