A Beisl or Beisel is an Austrian tavern or inn.

According Dictionary of Bavarian Dialects in Austria , the term comes from the Czech "Pajzl", which means as much as pub or tavern . It is a diminishing short form of the noun “hampejz” - meaning “dog house, bowling alley”, later also “brothel”. Other possibilities are from Yiddish bajiss (house), as well as an Austrian dialectal diminutive of the word Beiz, which is widespread in German-speaking Switzerland , or the Bavarian Boazn . First was understood in Vienna under Beisl a local low quality, until a change of meaning hired for the better. Today we even speak of noble restaurants , these are restaurants with refined, down-to-earth cuisine.

In 1976 Peter Alexander brought out a cover version of the hit In 't kleine café aan de haven with Das kleine Beisl .
