Austrian singer-songwriter is the name given to Austrian singers who perform songs they have written. In the early years, their texts were heavily influenced by Viennese dialect , “ Viennese Schmäh ” and black humor .

history

The songwriting scene in Austria has been around since the late 1960s. On one side there was the hit at the beginning , on the other the pop. Udo Jürgens , among others, achieved a high level of awareness as the songwriter of Schlager, while singers such as Georg Danzer , who are assigned to pop, had commercial success a little later. With the flourishing of the Viennese dialect wave, the scene turned more and more to pop.

Sigi Maron (2008)

An example of this came with the duo Wolfgang Ambros / Joesi Prokopetz with the song Da Hofa from 1971, which stormed the Austrian charts in October of the same year. At about the same time, Georg Danzer released the then controversial song Der Tschik . At the beginning you didn't know who had sung the song, only after a voice analysis could you identify Danzer as the interpreter. In the song, Danzer describes life from the perspective of a so-called sandler . A few years later, Danzer's commercial breakthrough came with the song Jö schau . Danzer had previously worked for the pop group The Madcaps .

In 1972 the Viennese songwriter Heinrich Walcher was able to place himself at number 1 in the Austrian charts with Gummizwerg . At first it was thought that the song was a hit with no meaningful content. However, it later turned out that the words snow , grass and coke were alluding to drugs.

Furthermore, the former radio presenter André Heller was able to establish himself as a songwriter and chansonnier in the Austrian music scene.

Willi Resetarits , member of the former political rock band Butterflies , and the author and songwriter Ernst Molden (2008)

In the first half of the 1970s , socially critical and politically left songwriters and singers established themselves in the environment of the Folk Club Atlantis and especially after the Arena line-up , who found lively popularity within their own, relatively closed market segment, such as The Butterflies with their proletarian passion , Sigi Maron or Erich Demmer .

The painter and poet Arik Brauer made a singing career in the 1970s. With his songs in the Viennese dialect, such as B. Behind mine, in front of mine or you have built a house , he had very successful long-playing records and became one of the fathers of a politically active Austropop . With his daughters and Elias Meiri he has been performing as Die Brauers since 2000 .

In 1976, Wolfgang Ambros' album Es lebe der Zentralfriedhof was his most commercially successful work. Before that, the title track and the song Zwickt's mi had already run very successfully on various radio stations.

Towards the end of the 1970s, Ludwig Hirsch became well-known in Austria with his albums Komm, Großes Schwarze Vogel and Dunkelgraue Lieder . In the media, as he said in a later interview, his texts were taken more seriously than they were meant to be. For example, the station Ö3 forbade the song Komm, Big Black Bird to be played after 10 p.m., as the radio station believed that at this time - due to the morbid text and the gloomy atmosphere - people could be suicidal.

At the beginning of the 1980s, the songwriter Rainhard Fendrich made it to number 1 on the Austrian charts with the song Strada del sole . Another four number one hits and a high level of awareness in German-speaking countries should follow. He also became known with the ballad I Am from Austria .

Towards the middle and end of the 1980s, the band STS , Stefanie Werger and the Original Alpinkatzen with lead singer Hubert von Goisern also moved into the spotlight.

In the course of the 1990s, well-known songwriters slowly withdrew from the commercial music business. Musicians like Wolfgang Ambros or STS have been removed from the radio programs of youth stations.

After Rainhard Fendrich had his last number one hit with Blond in 1997 , the Trio Austria 3 , consisting of Wolfgang Ambros , Georg Danzer and Rainhard Fendrich , was founded for charitable purposes . The songwriting scene blossomed again to the surprise of the media. This was followed by sold-out concerts and two number one albums by the group.

Clara Luzia (2011)

Willi Resetarits , who after the end of the blues- and rock-oriented Kurt Ostbahn has been making music with the Stubnblues, among others , and Hubert von Goisern ( Brenna tuat's guat , 2011) have continued to be successful since the 2000s, partly in new formations . Ambros also released new albums, after a long break from Sigi Maron and others. With the deaths of Georg Danzer (2007), Hansi Lang (2008) and Ludwig Hirsch (2011), the scene lost some of its most outstanding representatives within a few years.

In addition, a number of younger musicians established themselves, but they were not yet able to achieve the broad impact of the stars from earlier decades. These include artists as diverse as Valérie Sajdik , who is strongly oriented towards chanson, Clara Luzia , Mika Vember and Der Nino from Vienna , who is in the independent sector , and Violetta Parisini , who is inclined towards pop and electronics , as well as dialect following more of the singer-songwriter tradition -Artists like the writer and musician Ernst Molden , the Duo Christoph and Lollo and groups like Die Strottern , 5 / 8erl in Ehr'n and the Kollegium Kalksburg .
