Leo Aberer (born March 27, 1978 in Vienna ), also LEO or Leeone , is an Austrian singer and songwriter . He became known through his participation in the Ö3 Soundcheck 2005, the ORF show The Match and the Austrian preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 with Patricia Kaiser .

education

Leo Aberer has been taking violin lessons at the Vienna Conservatory since he was seven . At the age of 14 he was engaged - at that time still as a soprano - at the Vienna Volksoper and sang together with Plácido Domingo in the piece Gianni Scicchi by Puccini . He later learned to play guitar and keyboard himself. This was followed by studying jazz singing at the Karl-Franzens University in Graz . He also studied business administration and psychology, which he completed in 2004 with a master's degree.

In 2003 he recorded his first studio album and his debut single Stars , which reached number 69 (album) and 21 in the Austrian charts. When he took part in the Ö3 Soundcheck in 2005, he came second and received a new record deal with Universal Music . He toured Austria with his band in 2006. In the same year he was in the charts for 20 weeks with his single Won't You Know and reached number 21. Other publications such as Walking and Talking followed. This was followed in 2007 by the nomination for the Amadeus Austrian Music Award .

As part of the Ö3 initiative “ Die Neuen Österreicher ”, Leo Aberer, together with other musicians from Austria, recorded the single Kinder in November 2007 , the proceeds of which went to the “ Licht ins Dunkel ” fundraising campaign . The song went straight to number 1 in the Ö3 listener charts on December 9, 2007 . He reached number 3 in the Ö3 Austria Top 40 single charts.

In addition to international own concerts, he joined since about 2002 in the opening act , among others, Rod Stewart , Earth, Wind & Fire , Sascha , Simple Minds or Right Said Fred on.

The founding of his own record label and publishing house Black Baracuda was followed by his own film company Leoversum in 2013.

On March 26, 2008, the video for the song Sweet Honey reached number 14 on the international YouTube charts. The title was interpreted together with Laith al Deen in 2010. After he released the long player Sackgasse in 2009, he went to Los Angeles to record his new album with rapper LL Cool J.

In 2010 the album Wann geda? , which marked Aberer's first chart entry in years. Also in 2010, the title I Wanna Be Free was in the Italian charts for 14 weeks and at festivals such as Lecce and “Top of the Pops” on the Italian TV channel RAI Duo. In the autumn of the same year he reached first place in the public voting for the Austrian preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2011, together with Patricia Kaiser and the song There Will Never Be Another You .

In May 2012 he released the song and the video for Euro 2012 Football Is My Life together with Shaggy . The accompanying video was shot in New York and Budapest. The single Giovanna reached 5th place in the Austrian charts; the associated video recorded 1.7 million views within two years.

So Low reached number 23 on the charts; the accompanying video was shot in Africa.

In May 2014 Leo Aberer received the Archduke Johann Award of the Province of Styria, which was presented as part of the “Band für Steiermark” charity event .

A second collaboration with Shaggy took place on the occasion of the 2014 World Cup with the title Football Minha Vida . The single Kangaroo in the summer of 2014 reached the highest chart position with number 9 in the sales charts and lasted 10 weeks; it landed at number 1 in the iTunes charts. In November 2014, she began working with Marco Angelini ; the first joint single Goodbye topped the iTunes charts for weeks, rose to number 23 on the official Austrian charts and reached number 9.

The single Kangaroo Summer Edit feat. Martin Van Lectro was released in 2015 and is part of Club Sounds Vol. 75 .

In July 2018, Aberer entered the Spanish physical / digital single Top 50 with the single Sorry and reached number 15 there.

In 2018/2019 Leo Aberer toured Africa . He appeared on the biggest shows like CNN , Ten over 10, Citizen, Kenya Broadcasting Corporation , K24, Arena 254, Trend, Ktn, Mseto and was known there as "PAPA LEO". He also helps children in a school in Ukunda .

Music genre

Aberer's music is mainly pop , but it is also influenced by blues , swing , reggae and hip-hop elements. One example of this is his single Walking and Talking , which is based on Ray Charles ' hit the Road Jack .
