Ukunda is a coastal town in Kenya . It is located in Kwale County about 30 kilometers south of Mombasa on the A14 Mombasa - Lunga Lunga Main Road transit road to Tanzania .

Ukunda has its own airport for domestic flights, which is especially important for the arrival and departure to the many beach hotels for tourists, as the place is on Diani Beach .

The number of inhabitants is estimated at around 61,000 (as of 2007). People have moved to the coast from all parts of the country to get a small share of the income from tourism. As a result of the influx, the inhabitants of Ukunda belong to around 16 different tribes.

Many workers who work in the tourism industry on the south coast of Kenya live in Ukunda. Apart from agriculture and animal husbandry, there are no other employment opportunities. 52 percent of Ukunda's residents are unemployed. There are a number of smaller shops, two supermarkets, gas stations and various companies that benefit from tourism, for example car rentals, a bank, souvenir shops and a private hospital.

In Ukunda, industry is of no importance as an economic factor, there are no larger companies.

The core of the site consists of a mosque and smaller houses, some of which are made of stone and some of palm leaves (makuti). The main road from Mombasa to Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) runs through the village, with a turnoff to Diani Beach. The place therefore serves as a rest stop for drivers of intercity buses and trucks.
